Secrets, collectivism & Silence: hidden sexual abuse
As a Latina therapist, nothing enrages me more than to see my community hurt by secrets, silence, and the power that collectivist families hold. Many Latin or Hispanic families pride themselves on image and honor, but behind closed doors within the tight-knit fabric of these families is a very insidious reality: hidden sexual abuse. This taboo topic goes unspoken and is buried in silence, leaving a devastating impact on both the individual and the collective family as a whole. In this blog, I will shed light on the consequences of hidden sexual abuse within Latin/ Hispanic families in hopes of fostering awareness, encourage open dialogue and promote healing within our communities and families.
Sexual abuse can manifest itself in many forms, including but not limited to molestation, harassment, exploitation, and incest. Child sexual abuse is not solely restricted to physical contact; noncontact abuse such as exposure, voyeurism, and child pornography are to be included. It’s crucial to understand signs and symptoms such as withdrawal, behavioral changes, depression, or unexplained physical injuries. By raising awareness we can work towards resolution.
In Latin/ Hispanic families, we often face unique cultural factors that can contribute to secrecy surrounding sexual abuse. Family honor, shame, and maintaining family appearances are all factors that may deter victims from speaking out. There is often a hierarchy in each family that may create a fear of rejection or isolation if sexual abuse is disclosed, especially if you were raised in a more traditional gender roled household. Many victims choose not to speak out for fear of being outcast which creates a higher risk of losing their sense of support. It’s important to acknowledge how much our culture prides itself on this collective tightness and anyone who may want to call out their abuser in the family may be seen as a threat that disturbs family harmony. By refusing to acknowledge the victim, the family sends a clear message to the victim: "It's more important to maintain the family image than to protect a child."
This will have devastating consequences on the individual for years to come, impacting their mental, emotional, and physical well-being. These survivors may struggle with low self-esteem, isolation, anxiety, depression, trust and relationship issues and even engage in self-destructive behaviors. Families need to step up. It is essential to VALIDATE their experiences, offer support, and connect them with professional help and resources.
Keeping sexual abuse hidden to protect the abuser in the family has a profound impact on the entire family. The dynamics of trust and communication within the family become distorted causing rifts and strained relationships. Uncovering and addressing these hidden wounds can help bring healing, restore trust, and foster healthier family connections. The longer the abuse stays hidden, the more power and fuel it gives the collective family. You may ask, how can you protect future generations? Educating parents, caregivers, and children about appropriate supervision, healthy boundaries, and consent, and encourage open communication.
By acknowledging hidden sexual abuse and its existence, we can engage in open and honest conversation to dismantle the barriers and misconceptions that perpetuate silence and suffering. Let us work together to break the cycle of hidden sexual abuse within our beloved families. If this blog has touched tender wounds, I encourage you to seek professional help.
Sending you all love, support, and strength
